Nikon 28-300mm Lens: The Ultimate All-in-One Lens for Full-frame Shooters?

Any Nikon shooter who has switched back to full frame cameras from the popular DX size sensor is likely to tell you how much they miss the excellent and convenient Nikon 18-200mm “all-in-one” zoom that until now has been the ultimate vacation and travel lens. Good enough for simple pro projects but small, flexible and convenient enough to be the only lens for many amateur and entry level “prosumer” photographers with DX size sensors. But what about for full frame shooters? Does the 28-300 fit the bill? Read on to find out…

Nikon Introduces Smaller, Cheaper Version of Flagship SB-900 Speedlight

For those craving a smaller, lighter version of the amazing Nikon SB-900 speed light, help is on the way. In November Nikon will be shipping the sleeker, smaller and cheaper SB-700 with the new interface and many of the new features of the SB-900 for a much lower MSRP of $329. It is lower power and gives up some features like the extended 200mm zoom of its bigger brother, but adds some new ones like a "Quick Wireless" setup mode and hard plastic colored filters to replace the flimsy cellophane ones. The full press release follows...

Sigma 70-300mm DG OS Lens: Another Lightweight Winner for Budget Conscious Shooters

Moving beyond the kit lens is a big and very common step in upgrading your photo gear. One of the first lenses most photographers want to add is a better telephoto zoom. But their jaws drop at the size, weight and price of the big “pro” lenses so their next best choice is the very popular 70-300mm zoom. Nikon and Canon have great products in that range but at nearly $600 they’re more than many photographers paid for their camera and more than many of them want to spend. Fortunately Sigma has upgraded its popular 70-300mm Zoom to include both a motor and stabilization and kept the street price under $400…

Very Cool (Free) Guide to Video D-SLRs from B&H

The folks at B&H realize how interesting but also how complicated the addition of video to the D-SLR has made our buying decisions and how many new accessory needs it has created. So they've created a really nifty interactive guide to HD-Video D-SLRs that you can benefit from for free. Just click the Start button in the HDSLR logo to the left of this post to get started. And make sure and let us know what you think about their information on the subject.

My Favorite Android Apps—Especially for Travel and Photography

After many years clinging to Windows Mobile hoping for a miracle I finally gave up this year and switched to an HTC Aria from AT&T running Android—the open source phone OS from Google. I’m with AT&T mostly because it has the best international roaming options, and the Aria is their first really sweet Android phone (and tiny!). A lot has been written about iPhones and iPads for travel and photography, but for those of you with or considering or owning an Android phone here are the applications I’ve battle tested and relied on in the 20,000 miles of road and air trips I’ve completed in the 90 days I’ve had the phone…
