Our Country's New Wall -- from the American Side

After hearing about it for years Annie and I made it a point to drive along the new Mexican-American Wall while we were in southern Texas...Ironically the wall--really a fence in the area we saw from Brownsville to McAllen, a 50 mile stretch--was surprisingly attractive physically. As you can see from the attached image it is a very tall "picket fence" made of I-Beam sized steel beams.

What's That Big Bird?

As several readers reminded me when I posted the Texas Desert Tortoise photo, we see a lot more than birds on our Texas photo safaris. This year we had some great opportunities to photograph Steve Bentsen's deer when they came down to drink...For those not familiar with the way most of Texas works, something like 90% of the land is private (vs. as much as 90% public in some of the other western states). So it is not uncommon to have large herds of deer on a big property. But that doesn't make them any easier to find when they don't want to be found.

The Death of Kodachrome: Does it still matter?

Kodak announced this week they have stopped making Kodachrome--probably the most well-known film of all time. This has caused no end of commentary but the truth is that of course it ceased to matter to most of us a long time ago.

Go back in time at Somewhere in Time in the Texas Hill Country

My daughter Annie and I just enjoyed a truly wonderful weekend at the Somewhere in Time Guest House which is part of the unique Block Creek Natural Area in the Texas Hill Country...

Windows 7: Should you take the Plunge?

Do you think you have plenty of time to decide whether to upgrade to Windows 7? If you want to get it for a reasonable price, you may have a lot less time than you think...

Shooting Face to Face the Easy Way

It's not only mammals and birds which benefit from eye level photography. Some of our smaller friends like this threatened Texas Desert Tortoise also look more interesting and compelling when photographed at eye level. For those of us who don't love getting down on our bellies on the hot desert sand, this is another place where well constructed sunken blinds come into play. We photographed this fellow (it was a male) from the comfort of one of Steve Bentsen's blinds on his Dos Venadas property. We got the shots we wanted without leaving our chairs.

Stacking Teleconverters -- Nikon Style

I've always been a little jealous of the possibility of stacking Teleconverters which Canon shooters seem to be able to do more easily than Nikon photographers. At the same time I've been puzzling over how to get my mind around having a D300 and a D700. Then yesterday on the pier at Padre Island it hit me...Why not think of the D300 as a D700 with a Teleconverter on it? Before you laugh, bear with me. The DX sensor provides a 1.5 "multiplier" (which of course is just a crop of the image resolved by a full frame lens) compared to the D700.
